Probably the cutest addition to anyone’s face…the freckle.
But why do people have freckles? And how do people get them? And how come some people get them sometimes while others have them all the time?
It’s all about a special cell called a melanocyte which produces melanin.
One type of melanin determines the colour of peoples’ skin, hair and eyes while another protects our DNA from harmful UV rays….which is why the more time you spend in the sun, the darker you get.
But people with darker skin have an even distribution of melanocytes throughout their body so the melanin in their body produces uniformly but people with fairer complexions have a tendency for their melanocytes to cluster together. So when the sun hits their cells, they react by producing melanin in a concentrated spot…aka the freckle.
So that’s why you may get freckles more in the summer and don’t get any in the winter. It all says why you’ve never seen a baby with a freckle…they haven’t been exposed to the sunlight enough to produce that melanin.
There are people in the world who don’t like their freckles though – so for you people – there are ways to lighten them – you can do a quick search of home remedies online or look into treatments, ultimately, you should speak your doctor or dermatologist about your best options.
